London, UK · Lisbon, Portugal · Constantly building, even if it's something small

Hi. I'm Tiago.

Six apps. Forty countries.
A thousand slow miles.
One moustache.

Solo builder

Two homes · One route · Status unhurried

Aviation by day, small software products by night, and running slowly somewhere in between — far enough into it now that other people ask me how to start, which makes me a coach in everything but the certificate. A family man for all the hours that are left, and those are the good ones. This is the side of the internet where I'm allowed to be less formal about it.

Gallery

Six apps. Nobody asked.

Product, code, infrastructure, pricing page and all. Built alone, in evenings, on the same small stack every time. Three of them are live businesses; the rest are mine alone. Hover to stop the carousel.

Shop

Small shop. Big opinions.

Pre-flight

Nothing here is on sale yet — this is the shopfront, not the till. There is no sign-up form and no mailing list: Notify me opens an email, already written, that you can send or close. I reply when the first run is printed, and that is the end of it.

First run

Merch.

06 pieces · printed in the UK

The honest bit

Why merch at all?

Everything else I make lives on a screen and disappears the moment somebody closes the tab. A printed thing sits in a drawer, gets worn thin, gets packed for a trip. I wanted a few objects that survive that way.

This first run is drawn from what I actually do — running, aviation, the two cities I keep flying between, and one moustache. When the range changes, this paragraph changes with it.

About

Forty countries. One moustache.

I grew up Portuguese and now live in London, which is a sentence hiding about four moves. Along the way I have lived in Jeddah, Tunis and Auckland — three cities that share almost nothing except that aviation is what took me to each of them, and in all of them I arrived knowing nobody.

Forty-odd countries later, I have stopped believing in the phrase "global product" unless somebody can tell me which forty. That is roughly what I do for a living too: commercial aviation, senior product marketing and product strategy, and a great deal of turning what a company says to itself into something a customer would actually recognise.

In whatever time is left over I build small software products on my own, and run — slowly, often, and with more enthusiasm than talent. Neither pays for itself yet. Both are the part of the week I look forward to.

I look up a lot. NASA got me first, SpaceX got me again twenty years later, and somewhere in between a widebody taught me that engineering can be beautiful without ever saying so.

The fleet I'd fly

Three aircraft,
no arguments.

AirbusA350

The one that made long-haul quiet. Carbon fibre, big windows, and a cabin altitude that means you land like a person rather than a parcel.

AirbusA320

The workhorse. Tens of millions of flights of collective muscle memory. Unglamorous, everywhere, and quietly the most important aeroplane of my working life.

Boeing777

Two engines, no arguments. Still the most convincing case ever made for doing more with less.

Evenings

Independent software · six and counting

Designing, building and shipping small products on my own. The whole shelf is in /gallery.

Weekends

Family first, camera second

Most of the weekend belongs to the people I live with, which is the right order and took me a while to get to. What is left goes into a YouTube channel about running badly and improving anyway. Sign-off, every episode: "Go out. No matter what."

Most weeks

Running & walking

Half marathons at a pace nobody would call quick, and long walks whenever the weather allows it. The 1:30 is still out there somewhere.

Ongoing

Whatever is half-built

There is always one in progress. Right now it is Sereno, with Solar queued behind it. The finished ones are in the gallery; this is the one that keeps me up.
